| National Workers Memorial Day |
Each year on April 28 AFL-CIO unions recognize those who are killed and injured in the workplace as part of Workers Memorial Day. In Canada , a similar remembrance on the same date is known as the National Day of Mourning. Workers Memorial Day was first observed in 1989. AFL-CIO unions chose April 28 because it is the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Annually more than 56,000 workers die from job-related injuries and illnesses. Another six million are injured on the job.
